Caring for Granite & Bronze Memorials

Caring for Granite & Bronze Memorials

How to Care for Granite Memorials

  • Granite markers are a combination of the finest natural material and modern craftsmanship. NEVER use waxes or polishes on granite. Any window cleaning agent such as Windex will bring up the natural luster by cleaning the surface of the stone.
  • At least once a year - Memorial Day, anniversary, birthday- clean the granite with a solution made from 3 or 4 tablespoons of an electric dishwasher detergent like Cascade, Electrasol or Sunlight and one quart of water.
  • Thoroughly scrub the polished surface and the carved areas of the memorial. A stiff bristled brush (not wire) should be used. When washing is completed, the granite should be rinsed thoroughly. Make sure to wear appropriate eye protection so as not to get the solution in your eyes.

How to Care for Bronze Memorials

  • New bronze memorials should be cleaned with a solution of dish water detergent mixed with water.
  • A soft dampened cloth or a soft nylon bristle brush - such as a toothbrush or shoe brush - can be used to remove the hardened dirt between the letters. Rinse off the memorial with clean water.
  • Bronze memorials that have reached an advanced patina stage may need more aggressive cleaning. Mineral oil, WD-40, or Armour-All and a nylon bristle brush are suggested. Once cleaned and rinsed, a light spray with WD-40 or an application of car wax can serve as a barrier to the elements.
